As in previous years, Yokohama FC announced the contract extension of the world’s oldest professional footballer, Kazuyoshi Miura, on January 11. “King Kazu”, now a proud 53 years old, will continue to play in the J1 League in the 2021 season.

Miura made just six appearances for Yokohama FC last year. “It was an unsatisfying season for me personally, but my ambitions and passion for football only continue to grow. I work hard every day with the goal of playing more games and contributing to the team’s victory,” the striker said.

Miura went to Brazil to play football as a teenager in 1982, which is said to have made him the model for the famous manga series “Captain Tsubasa”. Since the same year, the striker has been a professional player, who also had stints at Genoa and Dinamo Zagreb, in addition to multiple contracts in Brazil. Miura returned from South America in 1990, making him the only active player in Japan to have already played in the Japan Soccer League.
