In the Premier League, West Ham United have made great use of other club's being out of form by competing for a spot in next year's Champions League. The London-based club also showed its ambitions on the international transfer market. New signing Saïd Benrahma was the most expensive transfer this winter. The Hammers paid €23.1 million for the forward, who was initially signed on a loan deal. As a result, Benrahma is a shoo-in into the top XI.

The Transfermarkt top XI combines the most valuable players, who moved on transfer deadline day. In times of COVID-19 and financial uncertainty, it is no surprise that the vast majority of clubs have focused on loan deals. Seven loan players have made the top XI.

Martin Ødegaard is the most valuable player in the top XI. The Norwegian is more than familiar with loan deals as the attacking midfielder once again left his club Real Madrid to receive playing time elsewhere. Since the now 22-year-old was sign by Los Blancos in 2015 for €2.8 million, Ødegaard, who was once considered a wunderkind, has been loaned out to four different clubs. This time Ødegaard has been parked at Arsenal

Fourth loan for Real Madrid's Ødegaard: Arsenal "suits me"

"I like the club and I always liked the way that the club wants to play," Ødegaard said in an interview on Arsenal's homepage. "Everything about the club and now how the manager wants to play, I think it's a club that really suits me well. So I think it's a good match."

West Ham first How much did clubs invest in the winter? To the ranking Arsenal have the most new signings in the international top XI—aside from Ødegaard, the club also signed goalkeeper Mathew Ryan. Liverpool's Ozan Kabak, Ajax's Sébastien Haller and RB Leipzig's Dominik Szoboszlai are three more players that dominated the headlines this winter.

What stands out: One year ago €20 million or more was paid 17-times. With a fee of €55 million, Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes was the most expensive signing during the 2019/20 winter transfer window. This year the story was very different. Just five deals cost €20 million or more.
